As discussed a bit last week with reference to Mark Bell: powerlifting is the sport of three lifts: the bench press, squat, and deadlift. Bench press today is a follow up to the 5×5 back squats on Wednesday of last week, deadlifts coming next week perhaps?! The neuroendocrine response to major lifts like the bench press is potent and will increase your strength for other exercises as well… like the overhead presses we did last Tuesday. In other words, the general strength gained through improving your bench press will carry over to dips, pull-ups, and many other movements. Of note, we usually do lifts OTHER than the bench to help transfer to bench. Today we bench not only for bench sake- but for the same of other lifts as well.
