This year the CrossFit Games OPEN will be run in Feb/March as one way to qualify for the 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games. Another CrossFit Games OPEN will be run in OCTOBER as one way to qualify for the 2020 Reebok CrossFit Games. Yes that means there will be TWO Open Events run by CrossFit Hq this year- but they will be methods of qualifying for two DIFFERENT Games Events. So- you get the unique opportunity this year to do the OPEN TWICE!
Having said that… CrossFit Malibu will run the OPEN beginning on Thursday, February 21st but it will be much different than in past years. So far it sounds like the OPEN announcement will be made in the 5pm hour on Thursday night- however, CFHq will not be staging any events like they have in past years to announce the OPEN WOD of the week. The workout will simply be posted to crossfit.com. Once the WOD is posted, our 5pm gym’s Open Training Hour will be available for any and all athletes competing in the OPEN to test, practice, strategize for this workout. For the purpose of preparing for the WOD, athletes can stay all the way until 7pm on Thursday nights. (There will still be a coach running the 6pm WOD each Thursday. On Fridays, we will not run the OPEN WOD, but will continue with regular workouts as usual.) Then each Saturday morning for 5 weeks, we will run the OPEN WOD at the Hut across numerous heats, with athletes judging each other as we have done in the past. Scores get posted to the CFHq games page and those point totals count towards CrossFit Malibu’s standing in the 2019 competition. A similar app from Hq has been created to track your own personal performance place and percentile against those in California and across the world!

Both barbell movements with a 60/45kg barbell

Friday’s 4pm Open Training Hour
8:30am Whole Life Challenge Prelim WOD (but all members welcome!)
21-15-9 reps/round for time of: DB thrusters (50/35#) and Row for calories
9:30am BIG WOD- the typical Saturday morning group workout.
